The Tourist Festival "Romanov sheep – the Golden Fleece of Russia"

The festival "Romanov sheep – the Golden Fleece of Russia" is dedicated to the pride of the region – the famous Romanov sheep that was breeded at the area by the decree of Peter the Great in the XVII century.

Romanov-Borisoglebsk is the pre-revolutionary name of the town of Tutaev that was celebrating its 730-th anniversary in 2013.

Fur products from Romanov sheepskins are known throughout Russia nowadays as well.

The festival praising Romanov sheep was revived in 2001 based on traditions of pre-revolutionary fairs.

The exhibition organizers present the best samples of the breed in bright Panama hats, colourful boots with motley costume jewelry, tied up with silk ribbons.

In the town during the festival large fair is set accompanied by songs, dances, jokes and rhymes, short theatrical performances.

The celebration concert with congratulations delivered by the chiefs of the area and the town guests, an exhibition of sheep, a contest of sheep shearers, the contest “Miss sheep”, “The City of masters” featuring sale of items of folk crafts, the dramatized performance "The festvity at Kustodiev Boulevard" based on historical facts and documents have become traditional parts of the festival programme.
